What is an employment or recruitment agency?

An employment agency is a company that matches workers to open jobs.  An employer looking to fill a position appoints a recruitment agency to produce a list of workers.  The agency goes through the list of candidates, makes a selection and sends the list of candidates to the employer.  This may lead to an interview with the employer.

Visit the Worksmart website for more information on employment/recruitment agencies.

To find an employment agency, you can visit the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC).  The REC is the trade body that supports and represents over 8,000 UK recruitment agencies.

Visit the Recruitment & Employment Confederation website.

If you think you are being mistreated by an employer or recruitment agency you can call the Employment Agency Standards Helpline at 0845 955 5105* open Monday to Friday 9:00-17:00.

(*Helplines will be answered in English. Ask if there is an interpreter available.)
