EEA and Swiss nationals are free to enter and live in the UK without the need to apply for permission, unless you are a national of the A8 countries.
A8 European Nationals include people from:
If you are an A8 European national citizen of a country, you will have to register under the Workers Registration Scheme. Please see below for details of the Worker Registration Scheme.
Worker Registration Scheme (WRS)If you are an A8 European national, you will normally have to register under the Worker Registration Scheme (WRS) if you wish to work for an employer in the UK for more than one month. There is a £90 fee for the first time you register, but if you are re-registering there is no fee. You will need to re-register every time you change jobs.

Once you have been working in the UK legally for 12 months without a break in employment, you will no longer have to register on the Worker Registration Scheme. You can then obtain a registration certificate confirming your right to live and work in the UK. This can be done by filling out an EEA1 form on the UK Border Agency website.

Bulgarian and Romanian nationals (A2 countries)You can move and live freely in any European Union (EU) member state as a European Economic Area (EEA) national. You do not need permission under UK immigration rules to enter or stay in the UK.
To work in the UK you will usually need to apply for a worker accession card. Your employer may also have to apply for a work permit for you.

The Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme (SAWS)This scheme allows Romanian and Bulgarian nationals to do agricultural work in the UK for up to six months. Workers on the SAWS scheme will be carrying out agricultural work including:
To be eligible for the SAWS you need to be over 18 years of age and will need to apply for a work card from one of nine approved operators. SAWS approved operators are listed on the UK Border Agency website on the right side of the page link below.
The Sector Based Scheme (SBS)This scheme allows for Romanian and Bulgarian nationals to work within the food manufacturing industry in the UK for a maximum of 12 months. Workers employed on the SBS will work within one or more of the following areas:
To be eligible for the SBS you need to be between 18 and 30 years of age. To apply for the Sector Based Scheme (SBS) you need to fill out the SB1 form on the UK Border Agency website.
As an EEA national, you do not have to leave the UK when your permit expires and have the right to remain in the UK if you can support yourself and any dependants. Once you have worked in the UK for a continuous 12 month period you can apply for a registration certificate, which allows you to freely work in the UK.

Tier 1 – for highly skilled people. Those who qualify will be given free access to the labour market.
Tier 2 – for skilled workers with an offer of employment in the UK.
Tier 5 – for certain types of temporary work in the UK.
