Registering the birth of your childIf you give birth to a baby in the UK, you need to register the birth. If you live in England or Wales, your baby must be registered within 42 days in the district where the birth took place. This can usually be done at the hospital or at your local register office.
If you live in Northern Ireland, your baby must be registered within 42 days in the district where the birth took place or in the district in which the mother normally lives.
If you live in Scotland, your baby must be registered within 21 days in any registration district in Scotland.
